Planning your web site

Plan your website

Before your website is designed, it helps if you have a clear impression of how you want the end result to look like, how it will work, who your target audience is and what you want to share with them.

Spend some time looking at competitors' sites. See what kind of information are they offering. You should strive to offer more. Although a flashy looking site has "curbside appeal", good content provides the ultimate reward.

Take note of which type of navigation appeals to you, which kind of site structure is easiest to find information on and which kind of site would appeal to the kinds of customers you are trying to attract. Many people confuse the meaning of "web designer" to mean "graphic designer". A web designer should focus more on site structure. A good web design should guide the viewer through your site in a logical fashion.

Look at the site through your viewers' eyes. First impressions do count. Make sure you put your best foot forward. Although content is very important, if your company website should show that you care. Haphazard structure, second-rate graphics and inconsistency may give the viewer the impression that your company is run the same way.
